However, while Regenold stated that Gorilla Tape was ideal for outdoor repairs, its greater thickness and weight make it suboptimal for things like blister repair, stating that in contrast, duct tape provides, "zero resistance inside a sock". Stephen Regenold, reviewing the product for Gear Junkie, stated that in his tests of the product, it performed as promised, sticking to nearly any type of surface to which he applied it, including a tear on a down jacket, and that the Gorilla Tape held onto the jacket without stretching or any compromise, and managed to keep the insulation from escaping for an entire winter of skiing and hiking. It uses a resilient multiple-layer coating which provides UV and moisture resistance, preserving the grit and grip, allowing it to be confidently applied both. To prevent premature tearing, the two layers of fabric backing are slightly offset, making the tape 145% stronger than duct tape, while still allowing it to be torn by hand. Gorilla Tape incorporates a three-layer construction: a weather-resistant outer shell, reinforced fabric backing, and an adhesive layer that is twice as thick as the adhesive found on duct tape, which Popular Science says allows it to better surround and grip uneven surfaces. It had the tiniest hint of bitterness at the end, but I was hopeful that once the booze was added it’d cut the bitterness completely. Before she made me commit to a full one, the server brought out a shot of the virgin, Splenda-made margarita mix so I could taste it. Margaritas fall into the splurge category-which means I’m not usually looking to cut back on the sugar.īut in the name of journalism (you’re welcome), I decided to give the skinny margarita-called the Chiquita Margarita ($12) on the menu-a whirl. It isn’t going to kill you and might actually help satiate your sugar cravings to tide you over until the next splurge. My perspective (which I share with a lot of dietitians, might I add) is that if you’re careful with what you eat 90 percent of the time, you can totally, definitely throw caution to the wind and indulge every now and then. I mean, if there’s one thing you guys know about me and my personal philosophy on nutrition and wellness, it’s that I whole-heartedly endorse a good caloric splurge every now and then. It’s another one of those sugar-laden drinks I don’t have very often, but when I do, I go whole hog. I love a good margarita as much as the next gal. I have no way to check her facts on this, but I’ll assume that, yes, something made with Splenda instead of sugar will definitely have fewer calories. She said it’s made with a Splenda simple syrup-the kitchen makes it in-house-and that the drink has half the calories and sugar of a regular margarita. I just can’t stand that bitter saccharine aftertaste that most diet drinks entail.Īll of which is to say, when my server at La Calaca Feliz, Fairmount’s nine-month-old Mexican joint, spent five whole minutes trying to sell me on the skinny margarita last night (to be fair, I’d asked about it), I was skeptical. I’m not much of a soda drinker, anyway, but for the two times a year I actually crack open a Sprite or Coke, I always go for the full-sugar stuff. Please note that I am wary of all drinks that have the word “diet” attached to them. Herring said the use of the clips - some of which exceeded 16 minutes in length - weren’t covered under the fair use provision of the Copyright Act because Media Matters purportedly used them as part of its “naked political activism, advocacy and interference in OAN’s business relations.” The doctrine, known as “fair use,” applies to works that have a nexus to journalism, commentary, criticism or education. Copyright code and other laws to include a certain amount of copyright-protected material without first getting permission. News organizations are typically allowed under the U.S. The letter cited no specific legal issues with the column itself, but did accuse Media Matters of committing copyright infringement by repurposing lengthy clips from OAN programs that were embedded in that column and others. On Thursday, Herring Networks fired off a cease and desist letter to Media matters and its chief executive, Angelo Carusone, accusing the publication of attempting to influence Roku to pull OAN and the apps that support it from the platform. That carriage helped “subsidize” OAN’s business model, which relies on distribution and reach, the authors contend. The writers affirmed the Roku Channel is not alone in carrying OAN - the channel is also available on at least a half-dozen streaming apps that users can download from the platform’s app store, most of which are available for free. The Media Matters piece used comments attributed to Robert Herring, the owner of Herring Networks and the operator of OAN, who said two years ago that non-traditional forms of carriage - like distribution of its networks on streaming platforms - “would be a big part of our revenue stream moving forward.” The writers cited a press release issued by Herring last year that made the claim that OAN reached over “250 million monthly active users” across various traditional and non-traditional media distribution products. On January 13, Media Matters writers Emma Mae Weber and Beatrice Mount published a column that said Roku’s carriage of OAN on the Roku Chanel was “keeping a far-right channel unsuitable for cable news on life support.” It made the case that Roku’s carriage of OAN put it in front of 63 million active users of the streaming platform, and was a major part in the channel’s overall business plan, which relies on carriage to justify rates charged to advertisers. The letter, sent by OAN’s parent company Herring Networks, charged Media Matters with attempting to convince Roku to stop distributing the channel on its platform, where OAN is freely accessible through the Roku Channel. (Still frame via One America News Network broadcast, Graphic by The Desk)Ī progressive media watchdog website has been hit with a legal demand from the owner of One America News (OAN) over a blog post that focused on the channel’s distribution through Roku’s free, ad-supported television service. Both of those systems also include specialist and family physician practices, but they point to just how expensive the NSW plan might be.Īnd what of the money already spent on eHealth in NSW? Very early versions of Cerner began being implemented in the early 2000s, with FirstNet going live in a flawed implementation in 2009 and many of those costs are unquantifiable. AdventHealth, with 50 hospitals and more than 8000 beds, spent $US650m flipping from Cerner to Epic in 2021. Mayo Clinic spent $US1.5b rolling it out to its 90 hospitals and clinics between 20. The most recent implementations of Epic in the US point to just how expensive it is likely to be. Figures they quoted ranged from half a million dollars to over a billion, considering the size of the project. Our experts tell us this is just a drop in the ocean when it comes to a statewide implementation, however. It received $141 million in the 2021-22 state budget, and had already received an undisclosed amount to pay for the new pathology system in the 2020-21 budget. It is a huge operation, stretching from enormous tertiary referral hospitals that are some of the largest in the country, several paediatric hospitals, and numerous metro and regional hospitals, both large and very small.ĮHealth NSW told us yesterday that funding had been secured for the project but was not at liberty to tell us how much this would cost, as it was still in contract negotiations with Epic. NSW Health, in contrast, has 220 hospitals supporting 9500 beds covering eight million patients, and it employs more than 120,000 people. The three-site Parkville project had under 1000 beds at an overall cost of $124 million in 2019.ĪCT Health’s project, which is on the same scale in terms of bed numbers but is bigger than Parkville as it includes pathology and PAS, came in at $151m over 10 years, of which Epic received $114m. RCH had about 300 beds when it chose Epic, for a cost of $48 million in 2016. NSW Health’s announcement this week, however, represents magnitudes in scale. ACT Health also decided to implement Epic’s pathology system and its PAS to replace legacy systems, despite neither of these platforms having been tested in the Australian context before. The model developed for Parkville was then expanded upon by ACT Health for its three hospitals, walk-in centres and community care centres. Epic is widely used in paediatric hospitals around the world so it was not surprising it was chosen, but so successful has the implementation been that it was subsequently adopted by the other three hospitals in what is now known as the Parkville precinct. Epic’s EMR was pioneered in Australia at Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne in 2016 in what has been a highly successful project. There are a couple of international vendors who could probably achieve something approaching this using contemporary data exchange standards and integration engines, but for whatever reason, NSW Health has decided to start again, ripping out the Cerner-based platform it has invested hundreds of millions of dollars into with Epic, not just for its EMR but for pathology and patient administration too. While Pulse+IT sources told us earlier this year that NSW Health was considering a single vendor approach, the initial tender for what it calls the Single Digital Patient Record (SDPR) envisioned a far more integrated system, floating the idea that a smart vendor could devise a single view accessing various clinical systems despite the source or the silo in one view of the patient. The massive program will represent the largest implementation of any EMR platform in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest Epic implementations in the world, covering 220 hospitals and eight million patients. The cost of flipping NSW Health’s electronic medical record platform from Cerner to Epic could cost up to $1 billion over 10 years, industry experts project. Like if I actually do have a biotin sensitivity, I had zero clue up until now. But I seem to be in the minority with all these issues, so if you want to try it out, I guess go for it? I personally would probably talk to a doctor before doing so, just in case. Like even if it's the case where the breakout has to get worse before it gets better, my skin wasn't that bad to begin with, so I don't see the point. I don't know exactly what to do, but as of now, I do not plan on repurchasing the vitamins. It only got really bad in August around the time I started taking the Olly vitamins. As you can tell in the before pictures, it wasn't that terrible and that's basically how it had been since May. But my biggest issue was with how bad it had gotten in a short amount of time. I thought it was stress from moving back home with my parents, which could still be the case since like I stated earlier, my breakouts had started back in May. I completely took that out of my diet and thought I saw an improvement in my skin, but then it got worse again. At first, I thought the breakouts were due to an increase in junk food consumption because I had started eating those sugary dessert snacks (i.e. I also found out that people can be sensitive to biotin supplements and acne is one of the side effects, which could also possibly be the case for me. I honestly don't know if the vitamins solely caused this breakout, but I started reading what the negative reviews said and it seems like some people have had similar experiences to me. And I wanted to give the vitamins a fair shot because I have heard of certain vitamins and skincare products making the breakouts worse before getting better. Like I started talking about it on my instagram and never mentioned the vitamins being a potential cause for the breakouts. But I was 100% convinced it was something else. I noticed my skin getting really bad about 10 days into the vitamins. The lighting is slightly dimmer in the after photos because I think one of the lights in my bathroom went out, so if I look more dead in the after photos, that's why.įULL FACE (yes I look atrocious, boys i promise i'm not this ugly) Here are some unedited before and after photos. Towards the end, I started to forget to take them but I did finish the bottle in about 5 weeks. There were some days where I forgot to take a vitamin in the morning, so I would just take two at the same time. And food and water is not necessary to have with it. They never specified if it needed to be taken together or separately, so I took one in the morning and one in the evening. You're supposed to take two gummies daily. I'm not going into detail here about the product claims, but you can check it out on their website here! Basically, it's a gummy vitamin that is supposed to help improve skin, hair, and nails using Biotin, Vitamin C, E, and Keratin. (Which apparently seems to be a huge problem when it comes to products and brands that claim to make some physical changes to your body?! WHY IS THAT?!! anyways.) Not seeing any before/after photos made me a little hesitant, but I still wanted to try it out since it was cheap, had good ratings, and not the biggest loss of money if I didn't see any change. There are lots of positive ratings of the brand overall, so I wanted to see any before and after photos, but there were none. I forgot the exact date, but I think I started taking them around August 12th, 2019 according to the date of my "before" photos. I have seen social media influencers use this brand, so I decided to try it out for a month and see what would happen. The vitamins I originally wanted and had seen results from hundreds of people were kinda expensive, so I found a cheaper alternative at the drugstore, by a brand called Olly. Well, mostly my skin, but I wasn't opposed to hair growth. Like I was going to post an updated skin care routine and then my skin went crazy and I scrapped the idea (for now).īut I was open to using some kind of supplement that would help improve my skin and hair. I have been trying to figure out why because there hasn't been any significant change in the products I use or the food I eat. The breakouts have been more regular and my skin isn't as smooth as it used to be. But in the past 5ish months, my skin has changed. The breakout would happen, I would freak out for a second (probably post a snapchat about it □), and then my skin would go back to normal. And it was usually like 2-3 breakouts, so nothing like super crazy. If I ever had breakouts, which was more frequent in college, I was able to eventually pinpoint what exactly caused it, and it would usually be linked to stress or a certain food. |
